History

A bit of history

The town takes its name from a private chapel that Francisco Casco de Mendoza built around 1730 on his estancia, by the arroyo de la Cruz stream. On September 14, 1735, the day of the Exaltación de la Cruz (Exaltation of the Cross), the chapel was raised to a vice-parish: that is the founding date.

In 1871 “El Monitor de la Campaña”, the first weekly newspaper of rural Buenos Aires Province, began to be published there. The Puente Viejo “Brigadier Mitre”, from 1861, was the first bridge over the arroyo de la Cruz, and the current church opened in 1865.

Since 1994 the entire town has been a Bien de Interés Histórico Nacional (national historic site).
