History

A bit of history

Before it was called Tigre, the area was the Pago de las Conchas. The name comes from the yaguaretés (jaguars) —“tigres” to the conquistadors— that lived in the Delta: according to tradition, one lived by a stream that ended up being called arroyo Tigre.

On August 4, 1806 Santiago de Liniers landed at Las Conchas for the Reconquista (reconquest) of Buenos Aires; that is why that day is Tigre Day and the river was renamed Reconquista. The railway arrived in 1865, the first regatta was held on the Luján River in 1873, and in 1954 the Las Conchas district was renamed Tigre.

The Museo de Arte Tigre occupies the building of the former Tigre Club, opened on January 13, 1912, and a National Historic Monument since 1979. A few blocks away, the Puerto de Frutos, which began as the port where the Delta's produce arrived, is today a market with more than 500 stalls.
