History

A bit of history

Areco was founded on October 23, 1730, when some twenty-five landowners led by José Ruiz de Arellano built the chapel they had promised to San Antonio de Padua: in 1714 they had asked him to protect them from Querandí attacks, and that is where the town's name comes from.

In 1926 Ricardo Güiraldes published “Don Segundo Sombra”, inspired by Segundo Ramírez, a gaucho from Areco. The Parque Criollo y Museo Gauchesco Ricardo Güiraldes, opened on October 16, 1938, keeps that story alive in a 97-hectare park on the banks of the Areco River.

Since 1939 the town has celebrated the Fiesta de la Tradición on the weekend closest to November 10, the oldest criollo festival in the country. In 2015 national law 27.105 declared San Antonio de Areco the National Capital of Tradition.
