History

A bit of history

Uribelarrea was born in 1890, when the rancher Miguel Nemesio de Uribelarrea donated part of his land for a farming colony. The town bears his name.

The architect Pedro Benoit designed the octagonal Plaza Centenario and the neo-Gothic Nuestra Señora de Luján church, opened on July 14, 1890. On January 26, 1894 the Escuela Agrotécnica Salesiana Don Bosco was founded, considered the first of its kind in Argentina.

Since 1892 the town has had a train to Cañuelas and Lobos. Its dirt streets and general stores were the setting for films such as “Juan Moreira” (1973) by Leonardo Favio and “Evita” (1996) by Alan Parker.
